By the way of a few small comments, someone tonight helped me realise why it is I feel I'm growing away from the goth social scene so much
( Read more... )
I haven't a clue which events you're referring to.. but thought I'd just chip in anyway...
You've got to be careful who you condemn, though... Personally, I've always thought it was all about having fun and being whatever you want to be... the kindof DIY punk-Goth ideal. But I do occasionally find myself falling into the pretentious mold myself and judging other people by my own definitions. It's not something I'm proud of, but I think we'd all be lying if we said we have never made snap judgements about people based upon our own definitions. Note the use of the word definitions here.. by that I'm talking 'vampire', 'spooky','metal', 'off the shelf Goth' etc, etc. We all have our own biases and preferences.
A certain amount of pretension is inevitable in a scene where appearance can be quite important... the Goth scene has recently started to remind me more and more of descriptions of royal courtiers of the past. I would agree with you though.. I'm sometimes left speechless by the sheer arrogance and judgmentalism I see in some of the more 'upwardly mobile social climbing goths'..
Still, it's no reason to give it all up.. if you abandon the Goth thang then that's one less person out there advocating the _good_ example of how it should be. Don't let the buggers get you down!
Perhaps vast amounts of vodka jelly will save this scene in the end? :-)
