While Pete is staying at Liz's -- another rough patch in his marriage -- Paula has given them her blessing to have an affair.
Pete communicates this information while they're on the couch, watching Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (he'd never seen it, and Liz still can't understand why; she believes one of the cool things about having kids is going to see stuff like that without looking like a weirdo).
"On one hand," he says, "maybe committing adultery will give me a thrill, a rush of adrenaline, so I can stop picking fights with guys who look like they might carry guns--"
"Yeah, I'm getting concerned about that."
"--on the other, will it seem exciting if my wife is *letting* me do it?"
"Shouldn't you ask me if I *want* to have an affair with you?"
"I was wondering if I should ask you. Now I'm telling you about the fact that I might."
"Okay."
There's a moment of silence in their conversation, which seems more awkward when it's being filled with the girl chipmunks harmonizing on 'Single Ladies.'
"Would you--"
"I don't know," Liz replies quickly. "On one hand, it might keep you from getting shot and... maybe I'm kind of... lonely. A little. I can deal with it, but... Anyway. On the other, could we really have sex? Wouldn't it be super weird if we started doing it? Do I want to find out what you do with the Pop Tarts?"
"That's between Paula and me."
Liz exhales. "Good."
Pete kisses her then, and Liz is too surprised to react at first. She parts her lips after a moment because, hey, making out is no big deal. Because she made out with Danny for a while and now there's no awkwardness between them.
"Rub the back of my knee," she says later.
"Say you want to punch me in the face," he replies.
When his hand is down the front of her sweatpants, she supposes the answer to are we going to have an affair? is yes.
*
Having sex with Pete *is* weird. Not just because they're both weird people, or because they're friends, or because she sees him all the time, or because of all the hair (she'd ask him to wax, but she has no say in this since she's not his wife -- she refuses to think of herself as his mistress -- and also, she believes he'd look worse without it), or because she knows what his orgasm face looks like and now, when he sneezes, she thinks about him with his pants off.
It's *really* weird because she likes it.
A lot.
When she tells Jack this, he doesn't believe her.
"Hornberger isn't the surname of a man who can pleasure a woman. But I'm sure he appreciates you lying on his behalf, though I don't understand what this lie is meant to accomplish."
"I am not lying. But whatever."
That night she's on top of him, rocking her hips and saying crap over and over again as she tightens around his cock.
(It's the dirtiest she ever talks in bed. He's really into it.)
*
Now that they're actually sleeping together, no one on their staff thinks they are.
She wonders what that means.
Probably nothing.
*
He thinks doing it in her office while everyone's outside would be exciting. (Right now, he needs exciting because he's very tempted to return to a Fight Club he'd joined. Predictably, he won't tell her anything about it.) They do it with all their clothes on as she leans over the desk. He holds onto her shoulders instead of her hips, making her lean farther down and pushing himself deeper inside her. She urges him to go faster, keeps saying it until she comes.
Afterwards, he claims he has no intention of rejoining his Fight Club.
Liz stops, trying to ignore the fact that she didn't rearrange her underwear properly and now it's creeping up somewhere it shouldn't be. "Doesn't not talking about Fight Club mean never even saying it exists? I mean, doesn't mentioning it constitute talking about it?"
Pete's shoulders slump. "Damn it."
"One rule. One rule and you *had* to break it."
He exhales. Nods. Grabs the hem of her shirt and pulls her close. They do it again, this time on the couch.
*
"How long is this going to last?" Liz asks. "Until it stops being exciting?"
(It feels wrong to use the word 'exciting' to describe a sexual relationship she's in.)
"Yeah," Pete says. "I guess."
"It's still exciting for you, though, right?"
"I haven't stabbed myself with a pencil for a few weeks."
She scrunches up her face. She forgot about that one. "Dude, how many things like that have you been into?"
He considers this. "More than you want to know."
She nods. "You're probably right." She pauses. "Wanna do it now?"
"Wanna do it on the floor?" he replies.
And their affair continues.
