She believes Jack is going to propose to her. Six months seems like a good time for them to commit to getting married, considering they've already established they like living together, want to share a future, and aren't getting any younger. (Though she supposes he'd only consider her inability to be Benjamin Button noteworthy. Maybe he still thinks he could Benjamin Button himself; it hasn't come up recently. She supposes she would meet him in the middle, though she doubts she'd be capable of taking care of a baby version of him when she's in her eighties. Why is this something she's thinking about? It's not going to happen.) More important than Liz's suspicion that he plans to ask her to marry him: she isn't afraid of getting engaged to Mr. I've Broken Up with Most of the Ladies in New York City. (Not an official title. As far as she knows.) Or getting married. She doesn't worry about him or herself or them. Not even a little. (Well, she worries. About stuff like what if I have trouble getting pregnant? or what if we disagree on the wedding cake? Obviously one of those concerns her more.)
She's contemplating the whole probable engagement thing while they're in bed one night. She's playing with a button on his pajamas as she rests her head on his chest. His hand is moving up and down her back until it rests right above her hip, and nothing's happening but she's happy just because she's curled up against him, ready to go to sleep. Then she has this weird feeling of not wanting to wait for another second. Of wanting to prove that she's free of what once held her back from letting herself admit she loves him. And she says:
"Let's get married."
