Depressed, dejected, disillusioned. Missy shouldn't make her feel this way, and neither should anyone else. For Torrance is not the depressed, dejected, disillusioned type.
On the other hand, though, she never thought she was the type to become infatuated with a girl. So, maybe types are meant to be broken just as hearts are meant to be shattered.
Nah, she's not any of those D-words. She's all of them in large font with capital letters.
"It's just...too complicated, you know? With Cliff and everything."
Torrance nods. She knows, rationally, that Missy is right. She knows, irrationally, that she would sacrifice all her comforts, sacrifice Cliff's feelings, sacrifice *everything* for this girl. This girl who's her best friend, the one person she can trust, the one person who believes in her. This girl who's haunted her dreams, touched her just so, made her feel... *something*.
"He'd freak out if he knew. He'd hate... the both of us, probably," she continues. Her lips are curled slightly, sadness dulling the corners of her smile.
"I know," she says. But he thinks Cliff would forgive them both, eventually -- she'd say that, if she thought it would matter to Missy. But Torrance has already given up. After all, she knows Missy isn't fighting.
"And I'm not gay or anything. It was just... something to try. You know?"
Torrance recognizes these words. They're the words she's supposed to say, the words of a straight-laced suburban cheerleader, not those of a freewheeling LA tough girl. But they are, in fact, coming from the tough girl, and the suburban girl doesn't know what to say in response.
At this moment, there's nothing she feels that she really knows. Nothing, except for the curve of Missy's breasts. The way her thighs taste. How she felt when Missy kissed her mouth.
The fact that things? Are not supposed to be this way.
"I know," Torrance exhales. "I'm glad you said it first," she lies.
