Assholery

The unfortunate truth is that we tend to overlook the good behavior of the majority of drivers on the road, while focusing on those who exemplify, shall we say, less than good behavior.  And this post will be no different.

Most of the time I attribute discourteous behavior to inattentive driving.., a driver with his head up his ass, not paying attention to what is going on around him.  And while I do my best to pay attention all of the time, we have all been guilty of this at one time or another.  So while an out to lunch driver is an annoyance, it's hardly a cause for ruffled feathers.

But this..., this that I am about to share, is more than a mere annoyance.  It's just sheer assholery!

Yesterday, on my jaunt from Wichita to Newton, not once, but twice, I found myself following someone in the left lane who was going slower than I wanted to go.  Someone who would not move back into the right lane and allow me to pass.  Okay.  This in and of itself does not constitute bad behavior in my book; it's just that whole head up the ass, not paying attention thing.  Not a big deal.  I run into this frequently as I am wont to drive 5 mph over the speed limit.  So part of the situation is on me.

Seeing my opportunity ~ an opportunity to dash back into the right lane myself and squeeze in front of this goober before coming up behind the next slow car in the right lane ~ I make my move.  Into the right lane I go, and I stomp on the gas.  With a 306 horsepower engine this is not an insignificant amount of acceleration, even without shifting down.  And you understand that at the time I move over into the right hand lane, I am going the exact same speed as the person I was following in the left hand lane.  The maneuver should have been easy.  No cause for worries for myself or the person I am passing.

Except the asshole(s) speeds up!  No shit!  Did I mention my wonderful ability to apply acceleration?  These bozos were not guilty of the minor shift in speeds that often occur when people are not using their cruise control; we're talking a stomp on the gas, conscious effort not to allow me to pass.

I couldn't believe it.  Twice within a ten minute time span.  Why?  What's the point?
