Just talked to Mum, there is extensive damage to her land, cracks in the foundation of the house, the front door doesn’t open, they have phone but no power or water or sewage. Liquefaction and “sand volcanoes” all over the place. Both cats have taken off. Woody didn’t come back for 3 days after the September quake. Bookie hid under the bed for that one, but this time he’s gone too.
They’ve got phone but no power, water or sewage. The guy across the road has power and has offered to put her stuff in his freezer if they don’t get power back in a couple of days. He’s told Mum and her partner that if they need _anything_, to just ask.
There were 3 or 4 little aftershocks in the time I was talking to her (about 15 minutes, total). She said that today’s earthquake was the scariest yet, and that she “almost had a meltdown” driving home from work. Frankly I can’t say as I blame her.
In other news, Wellington residents have given accommodation to passengers stranded by the closure of Christchurch airport. Friends of mine in Dunedin have also said they have beds available for anyone who wants to get the hell out of Dodge for a while.
And the very best part -- DH IS COMING HOME ON AN EARLY BUS TOMORROW! He should be here in the mid-afternoon.
