I think I am a real New Yorker now. I experienced my first transit/ terrorism crisis, I got my first cockroach, I have a 212 phone number, and I am taking my first "upstate" weekend.
On Wednesday there was some sort of steam pipeline explosion a few blocks from my office. Right as evening rush hour began, my coworkers and I heard/ felt a hard BOOM. I was leaving for the day anyway, so I went outside to investigate. The streets were flooded with people being evacuated from Grand Central Station. Of course, everyone thought we had been attacked by terrorists. It was pretty freaky. I looked down 41st street and saw the site of the blast.
Unfortunately, I was also carrying a 50 pound box that I needed to get onto the subway at grand central :(. After pushing through people and getting a few cabs stolen, I took a bike rickshaw. It was operated by a lovely fellow names Constantine who arrived from Russia a month ago. He said I was so nice and easy to carry that I did not have to pay him. Of course I gave him the full fare. It was a bumpy ride, but I made it to dinner on time and got my box home safely.
Last night found my first cockroach. It actually flew from place to place as we were trying to kill it. We live on the 20th Floor in a 2 year old building, this should not be happening. I am now the cleanest person in the world. ICK.
