Author's Notes: Based on a few sentence prompts on tumblr. Thought I'd share something lighter for once.
Ianto took a deep breath as there was another explosion of voices from the room next to his own. He’d got used to it over the past week as UNIT did their thing with the Hub and the homes of the rest of the team, but it was still a bit too much, given that he normally lived alone and only Jack was used to visiting.
A week ago one of them - they were still unsure who was responsible for the disaster - had released some sort of gas in the Hub and had then proceeded to go home. The gas - or whatever it was, really - was harmless to humans in the first twelve hours after it was applied, but it had somehow soaked into their clothes and they’d all carried it to their respective houses.
Everyone except for Ianto, who had slept in the Hub that same night.
After that UNIT had got involved and Jack had had the brilliant idea of getting everyone to temporarily move into Ianto's flat - Ianto's flat, which had very little to offer past one guest bedroom and a futon for six people in total.
He was just getting ready for bed and waiting for his turn for the bathroom (thankfully, he had two of them) when the door to his bedroom slammed open and Owen came in, carrying a suitcase.
“What do you think you’re doing?” He asked warily as Owen dumped it on his bed.
“I’m moving Ianto your room,” Owen announced and Ianto’s eyebrows shot up.
“No, you’re not,” he retorted immediately. “First, there’s not enough space. Second, you’ve already got a bed.”
“I can’t sleep in the same bed as Tosh,” Owen complained and plopped down on Ianto’s bed. “She gets all fidgety and weird and I don’t even know why. I’ve been sleeping on the floor of Gwen and Rhys’s room.” When that didn’t earn him Ianto’s compassion, he kept going. “Come on, mate, I’m desperate.”
“I told you, there’s not enough space,” Ianto reminded sternly. “Jack sleeps here.”
“Tell him to take my place, then!” Owen cried. “Do you know how awkward it is to sleep in the same room as Rhys?”
“Let me get this straight,” Ianto started slowly. “You expect me to tell Jack to give up a queen-sized bed so you can sleep in it and he can sleep on the floor?”
“Pretty much,” Owen conceded.
“Good luck with that,” Ianto scoffed. “It’s not happening.”
“Come on, Ianto, you can’t leave me like that!”
Ianto laughed incredulously. “Do you think I’m happy with this situation?”
“It’s your house!” Owen protested. “You’ve got to set the rules!”
“I did!” Ianto's patience was dangerously close to snapping. “And according to them, you can’t sleep here!”
“Rhys snores and I feel the urge to kill him whenever I look at him!”
“We all want to kill Rhys sometimes,” Ianto pointed out. “That’s not reason for you to move into my bedroom.”
“And there’s a sentence I never thought I’d hear.”
Jack’s voice came from the door and both men turned around to look at him.
“Owen wants to sleep here,” Ianto said and the Captain chanced a look in their medic’s direction before shaking his head firmly. “Absolutely not.”
“Told you!” Ianto offered cheerfully and then laid back on his bed with a groan as Owen went out, slamming the door behind his back. Jack joined him, only turning to look to look at him when they were in horizontal position.
“Why is the bathroom overfilling with water?” Jack asked mildly, out of nowhere, and Ianto jumped up again.
“What? Which one?”
“Not the one you use, thankfully,” Jack said. “And don’t you worry; I think Tosh is currently trying to fix it. Might be her fault. Either that or she’s covering Owen’s screw-up. Anyway,” Jack raised his voice as he pulled Ianto down again. “I’ve got a surprise for you.”
“Let me guess,” Ianto retorted sceptically. “It’s in your trousers.” He wouldn’t mind, come to think of it - he hadn’t had sex in a week.
“No,” Jack stressed. “I’ve got a romantic surprise for you. Follow me.”
“Follow you where?”
“Out,” Jack said curtly and let him through the strangely empty hallway and onto the staircase outside his flat.
Ianto had very good idea where they were going once Jack went up, but right now, he didn’t mind. Any sort of getaway would be a welcome one.
“Look.” Jack had lowered his voice and Ianto followed his gaze once they were up on the roof. It was the middle of summer and the sky was clearer than ever and - despite the light pollution - there were more stars than at any other time of the year. “That’s what I wanted to show you.”
“It’s amazing, Jack,” Ianto admitted. “Thank you.”
It was true. He often thought that he and Jack didn’t know each other that well, that there were still too many secrets both of them were keeping to themselves, but it was things like that that proved him wrong. Jack had done something terribly simple - he’d taken him out on the roof of his own building - but he’d given him everything he’d wanted - peace and quiet and a lot of space, in both senses of the world.
And of course, his own company.
“Come here, you,” Ianto smiled, bringing him closer by the collar of his coat. “I haven’t been alone with you in a week.”
