In the shadows of the small church, the native stood looking on. His heart breaking as he watched the ceremony unfold. He had left her to protect himself, to protect her from being hurt. He knew it wouldn’t be long before he’d fall into the cycle of violence his father lived, the same he had been subjected to as a child. The day he left he vowed he’d never return, that he was doing the right thing; that he was going to let her move on and live the life every woman should.
He wasn’t willing to have her suffer what his mother had.
Not a day had gone by since his departure that he didn’t think of her, her smile, her touch, and her kisses. How he missed the little things they did together; the walks in the park, just sitting on the couch being lazy with his arms around her smaller body. The raven haired male shook his head as he bit his lip, trying to suppress all the emotions and memories being here were causing him to relive. He sighed as he turned ready to leave not baring to see the scene unfold in front of him; not wanting to let her see him and ruin this day for her. He jumped slightly as he felt someone’s hand on his shoulder, turning he came face to face with Jacob.
“You came?” The other native whispered.
“It was a bad idea. I shouldn’t have come,” he stammered as he tried to move around Jacob. He sighed when the other didn’t move and turned his head in the direction of the altar. “She looks so happy,” he said dejectedly.
“Paul…” Jacob said with a sigh. “You know she still loves you…when you left it nearly broke her…” he explained and continued before Paul could interrupt. “I know you did it to protect her, but Paul…you’re not your father. You weren’t going to do what he did.”
“How do you know?” Paul asked bitterly.
“Cause you love her too much to do that to hurt her like that….Paul we could all tell how you tired…wanted so hard to not to be like him.” Jacob said trying to soothe the other.
“It doesn’t matter anymore Jake. I’ve lost her. She’s happy now…she’s better off without me.” Paul said his eyes betraying his every word. He shrugged Jacob’s hand off his shoulder.
“I can’t stay here…I’ve gotta go.”
Without another word he turned and headed out the door of the church, ignoring his friend calling him back. As he reached the door, he turned one last time and looked at the one he loved. His breath hitched as she turned and looked towards the entrance, her eyes falling on him.
“I’ll always love you, Bella,” he whispered with a sad smile, as he nodded to her, knowing this was goodbye. Paul turned and walked out never looking back and as much as it killed him knowing Bella wasn’t his, he knew it was for the best. She’d have the life he’d never be able to give her.
