A/N : This story suddenly popped out of nowhere when I was pondering about Emma-Brennan relationship. There just so much similarity between them, I couldn’t help but pair them up.
---
Sometimes she felt too much, she couldn’t breathe. She wanted to call for help, but she knew no one would understand.
No one ever understood.
She tried to control it, she tried. But sometimes, it was just too much.
Other people’s feelings and thoughts brushed hers, crowding her already full mind until she didn’t know anymore which ones were hers and which ones were others. She felt like blowing up.
And she didn’t, couldn’t, stop it.
That was why she always liked isolated places.
She didn’t have any friend. She never liked people, because what they said always different from what they thought or felt. They always, always lied. Then she started to manipulate them, deceiving them using her power. She thought, if they could lie to each other, why couldn’t she use her power to deceive them?
Then she met him.
---
In her haste to run from GSA, she stumbled upon him. Desperately, she tried to manipulate his mind into helping her, but blankness and emptiness she found there stunned her, and for a moment, she just gazed into his eyes. She couldn’t find anything there, and he seemed realize that something or someone had prodded his mind in that second.
She was amazed. Never before anyone realized that somehow she had prodded their minds.
So she started to watch him. What he did, how he reacted. She watched every time he was bickering with Jesse, sparring with Shalimar, talking with Adam, or when he was slouching beside her.
She couldn’t catch any emotion from him, other than pain when he was hurt.
It was like he actually didn’t feel anything at all.
A quick smile, a nonchalant response, an occasional smirk, a hearted laugh, a playful grin.
All the expression he ever showed, and not even once she caught any real emotion behind those. Like all of it was just a façade. Like all of it was just an automatic response.
She wanted that.
---
She always watched him. Sometimes, his eyes caught hers, and she knew that he knew she knew. And sometimes, at those times he flashed her his thoughts. Like he was actually mocking her. Like he was daring her to do something. Like he was trying to prove her that he did felt something, anything.
She thought all of it was just a façade to hide his real emotion. Then she realized she had been wrong.
From the first time, there had never been any façade at all. All those blankness and emptiness were his real emotions, what defined him. All other expressions he ever showed were just his subconscious mind, playing the trick.
His elemental power protected him and gave him strength, but it also shielded him from anything that might hurt him, even emotion. The irony wasn’t missed by her. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to feel, it was just he didn’t know how.
She didn’t know whether she wanted to cry or laugh. She had everything that he needed, so much real emotions passing her mind, but she didn’t know how to give it, and he just didn’t take it, because he didn’t even realize that he lacked in emotion department.
So much for having elemental power.
---
Sometimes, Emma felt too much. But she knew Brennan always felt too less.
So when she actually felt too much, she would seek him out, and just sat beside him. He always raised an eyebrow at her, and she would smile at him. Even if he never actually felt any real emotion, that was fine with her. Because she always felt enough for both of them.
