A rejection that basically was trying to "teach" me how to write properly in a horrible cut and paste critique style did not help this weekend. And I'd read too many bits and pieces of the critters critiques drifting in.
I went and properly read the critiques I've gotten and basically it's the usual not enough SF world building to explain my characters motivations. I've also somehow not made it clear who the POV character is, even though it was clear to me. Few other issues with 4 characters being in one short story, and making sure the reader gets the straight early enough to follow the story. So, not as bad as I thought. Fixable.
Perhaps the feeling that I'm banging my head against a brick wall with no results has faded for a bit.
Got to the better parts of Novella 2 in the revision. I think the funniest part of the novel is where my characters first meet each other, one completely unclothed. And only after the embarrassment does it dawn on her there's a strange unidentified human on an alien planet where there shouldn't be one.
Jedi read through a SF short this weekend for me. His opinion, it was rather dark. Was thinking I could do black humor, but seems this isn't the piece. Perhaps if I rework and just keep all the bad and dark it will possibly work, maybe for those dark SF places out there.
Next for him to read is my revised magic tech story. Magic technology is probably his favorite type of fantasy. It is also about the only type besides dark fantasy that I can manage.
Some days I have a bit of a cool job. Got to read up on intersexual individuals because at least last year there were lots of questions about it. Sounds like interesting story making stuff, especially if you consider that increased gonadotrophic-like chemicals in the environment may (and likely already have been) cause an increase in people that don't fit into any assigned anatomical or biological category. I also now know more about male circumcision that I'd probably really want to.
For other excitement last weekend I gardened. Found some flowers that work for the backyard and Jedi likes. And started a vegetable garden, though we'll see if there's enough sunlight where I placed it.
