I had my first voice lesson with the Mezzo of the voice faculty, Tracy Watson. Since my current teacher, Judy, is the "self appointed queen bee," she chooses what incoming students she wants to work with and then the rest of the faculty gets the rest of the "pickins." Sooooo even though I wanted to study with a mezzo, I didn't get to...(not bitter)
But it's like a different world. While her voice isn't as big as mine, she has a similar lightness as I do and has sung the same rep as I have. As we were going over arias, she was giving me tips that she had for getting through trouble spots. It was just amazing!!! I was singing better than I have in months!!! Judy is a great teacher, but it has taken us a year to understand each other...not to mention the fact that she's fucking CRAZY. Tracy and I clicked from the very beginning. It makes me wonder how much MORE progress I could have made if I had been studying with Tracy like I had wanted.
In order to not stir the turd politically here at the school, I will continue to study with Judy, but once I graduate, I'm studying with Tracy...she's worth the money. $100 for her AND an accompanist. You can't beat that! Soooooo, I'm feeling chipper about my voice and my general talent as a singer. I know I don't HAVE to study with a Mezzo to learn something, but it IS a nice change. I'm optimistic about this coming year. Perhaps I can have a few more lessons with Tracy before school starts, as well as during the Christmas break.
