as beth and i were standing in line waiting to buy cow-milk and soy-milk, the lady in front of us chatted away on her cell phone. she was barely aware that she was holding up the line trying to talk on the phone and purchase groceries at the same time. "where's the cereal," she asked. if she didn't have a phone glued to her head, she might have realised that she left it in the cart parked outside the checkout lane.
her daughter retrieved it for her. corn flakes. "this one has no calories so we won't get fat," said the girl, who was far too young to be so concerned with how many calories are in her breakfast cereal. besides, if she was really worried about calories, she wouldn't be trying to convince her mom that the three bags of hershey's kisses she placed on the conveyor were only a dollar.
everyone in line was obviously annoyed by the girl's mother. even the guy behind the register seemed bothered when she hung up on one phone call only to immediately start up another. then she had the cashier subtract two of the three bags of chocolate so that she could pay with a five dollar bill. life just doesn't seem fair for the rest of us when somebody uses up our freetime for their anytime.
but then fate smiled on me. she completed her purchase and walked away... leaving her keys sitting on the check-writing table. i waited to see if she would realise it, but she didn't. we paid for our milks and i handed the keys to the cashier. "she'll be back for these," i told him with a grin. as we exited the store, we walked past her. she was searching through her purse with one hand and talking on the phone with the other.
grocery karma.
