On Saturday, I went to
SMASH!, for the first time in
five years. It was out at Rosehill Gardens, and I was pretty stunned at how huge it had become. So many people! (I was also a little stunned that it was now $45 for the day.)
AnimeUNSW
So the main reason I decided to go this year is because it's the 20th anniversary of AnimeUNSW, and I was immensely curious about how the club is doing now. I got to have a chat with some of the current execs at the stall. When I told them that I was there when the club started in 1997, one of them said, "That's when I was born!" It really is wild to think about. They're still going strong: 600 members, screenings every week, a regular newsletter, and extra events this year for the anniversary.
A Bride's Story: Same-Sex Love and Unions
This panel discussed the historical background to same-sex love and unions in Otoyomegatari by Kaoru Mori, which is a manga set in Central Asia in the 19th century. While the main story is about a young woman who marries a boy from another tribe, Volume 7 focuses on two women who form a relationship.
Shopping
I saw so much cool merch and gorgeous fanart, but I limited myself to buying a keyring from the AnimeUNSW stall and a Yuri!!! on Ice print of Victor and Yuuri in Hasetsu. I also saw the most adorable handmade No Face plushie, but I justified that purchase as a gift, along with some Studio Ghibli prints.
Photos
Baymax! A minute after I took this photo, he was mobbed by people wanting hugs and selfies.
The first Yuri!!! on Ice cosplayers I've seen, and they made an awesome Victor and Yuuri.
The 5-Minute Cosplay Challenge involved two teams of five people, with five minutes to create a costume from leftover materials and duct tape. The first round was Sailor Moon, but I missed that one.
The second round was robots.
The third round was Pokemon.
