1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Fathered a child (well, I guess some salient bits were done in 2009), grew peas, built a hardwood floor, drafted a will, published a statistics paper, took a train in business class, drove a pickup truck.
2. Did you keep your New Year's Resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Not applicable, and I may endeavour to get on my bike every month in 2010, but I probably won't make a resolution of it.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Closest of all, Elizabeth did (and I got to help catch and snip the cord). Also, three co-workers and some of my favourite people from back in the country did.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope, although it seems like too many people close to me are losing people close to them.
5. What countries did you visit?
I stayed domestic. Six years running of not visiting the US. Sometime soon I should get a fresh passport in case I need it.
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
I can't think of too many things, maybe a promotion (there's a selection process in the fall that would allow me to add "senior" to my job title), maybe a heat pump to reduce our house's reliance on sketchy oil régimes.
7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
September 11 was a pretty momentous day with Oscar coming into the world, and August 1 was pretty terrifying when we thought he might be coming early.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Starting to be a parent and not blowing anything up yet :)
9. What was your biggest failure?
I had some disappointing deadline issues this year.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
My elbow was the size of a tennis ball due to an infection in July. Two courses of antibiotics later, it was back to its usual size.
11. What was the best thing someone bought you?
That
bucket of beer from my parents was tons of fun to enjoy and review.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Our awesome midwives!
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Our not-so-awesome federal cabinet and a majority of Toronto voters.
14. Where did most of your money go?
House (renovations and mortgage), heat, taxes.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Becoming a dad.
16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Flotilla's Song for Yannick
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? About the same.
b) thinner or fatter? About the same.
c) richer or poorer? Richer. Mostly due to less mortgage debt, but also my RRSP had nowhere to go but up :)
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing, cycling long distances.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Not much, maybe being grumpy?
20. How didwill you spend Christmas?
Eve in Nepean and Day in Ormstown, both with family and lots of food.
21. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Stayed in love!
22. How many one night stands?
I try and make my stands longer than that!
23. What was your favourite TV program?
The Office, on which we are a couple of seasons behind on DVD. I think it was about the only TV program I watched in any quantity this year. I'd like to pick up Dexter again.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope.
25. What was the best book you read?
Martin and Tuttle's Windhaven
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I found
Flanders and Swann re-released on iTunes - music of my childhood (originally heard on vinyl), and that sort of mix of glorious and occasionally appalling that Heinlein is in science fiction. Does that count?
27. What did you want and get?
A baby, a hardwood floor.
28. What did you want and not get?
A crop of black tomatoes and beans.
29. What was your favourite film of this year?
I pick re-watching Auntie Mame over seeing (once) Star Trek.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I had a night out at Brasseurs du Temps with cake and company back home afterward, and I was 30. It was a thoroughly enjoyable celebration.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Immeasurably? I don't do immesurable :)

Somewhat flamboyant with a bent toward low-maintenance.

Nora Young's voice.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
The Cons' war on the Census and on Toronto.
36. Who do you miss?
I sort of miss work, but I'll be waking up early and going back soon enough. I think it helps that I'm in little bits of contact with work still.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
Oscar is the newest person I've met, and pretty awesome.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010?
