BEFORE THE HULA HOOP THERE WAS THE COONSKIN CAP ...
AND EVERY BOY IN AMERICA HAD TO HAVE ONE
And a lot of girls too - like Elly Mae Clampett ... and the girl down the street.
Thanks to Walt Disney and the unknown actor he picked (over James Arness who was in the same movie) to play Davy Crockett.
Yep! Fess Parker, who played Davy, and who made buckskins and coonskin caps a national rage, has gone home. He may have been the first television "super-hero." He was certainly the first "All-American" hero.
Here's Fess singing the ballad of Davy Crockett:

The Ballad of Davy Crockett What a genuinely nice guy, whose down-home genuineness and character came through in his movie and television portrayals.
Oh, and look for Fess as a hillbilly pilot (which caught the attention of Walt Disney) in one of my favorite films of all time. It got him the role of Davy Crockett:
Fess's big break came in this sci-fi classic. God bless you, Fess.
The world was a better place with you in it.
"March 5th. Pop, pop, pop! Bom, bom, bom! throughout the day. No time for memorandums now. Go ahead! Liberty and Independence forever." - Davy Crockett (the day before the Mexican army stormed the Alamo in a pre-dawn raid in which Davy Crockett and all the defenders were killed)
