Day 8 - Your favorite Sam crying scene

Oh, Sammy.  I do so hate it when you cry.  For which I’m not exactly sure the reason; maybe it’s because I feel like when Sam cries, it might as well be Jared himself crying, but sometimes when Dean cries, I don’t necessarily feel like it’s all Jensen.  If that makes sense.  But not that Jensen is bad at those scenes, no sir.  The end of “Heaven and Hell” reduced me to a bawling mess.  But still, I feel like it makes it so much more real if it seems as if the actor is crying as well as the character.  Yeah, it probably only is rational in my mind, but whatever.

In any event, my “favorite” Sam crying scene would probably be in season three’s “Hunted,” when Gordon, newly vamped, is on the warpath to kill Sam.  Sam and Dean are in the motel room, and Dean, figuring he’s going to die in a few months anyway, opts to go after him himself.  Sam’s not so inclined.

It’s not particularly the dialogue itself that always gets me, but the delivery.  Dean’s flippancy coupled with Sam’s initial annoyance, then Sam saying he knows Dean better than anyone else in the entire world, because he’s been following him around since he was four.  Like in “A Very Supernatural Christmas,” Sam chooses to go with the vague “’Cause...just ’cause” instead of saying directly that he wants Dean to drop the show because he’s going to die (although Sam does say it earlier in the conversation).  For however terrified Dean may be, Sam’s equally so, perhaps more.  Dean’s been around his entire life, and the prospect of his big brother not being there anymore is gutting for Sam.

I thought Jared delivered the scene perfectly, delivered with precision the fear in Sam and the desperation to have Dean be like the brother Sam’s always known, because Dean won’t be around to do that much longer.  Though the scene may not have been meant to cause tears like “Heart” or “Heaven and Hell,” for me, it might as well have been.  Some of Jared’s best work, far as I’m concerned.

Speaking of “Heart,” though, I just have to say this: The ending scene of Sam having to kill Madison was one I almost picked, before deciding that while “Heart” gutted me, “Fresh Blood” seemed to pack a bit more of an emotional punch.  Unless, of course, I actively think of the reason why Jared was able to cry so profusely-because he imagined how he’d feel if his dogs, Harley and Sadie, died.  I painfully know now from personal experience that even just the thought of your dog(s) dying, let alone it actually happening, is more than enough to reduce even the strongest of people to an emotional and physical disaster, and I commend Jared with all I have for his willingness to draw upon the mere conception of that happening.
