Well,
A lot has been going down here at THE Ohio State University. First off let me just say how much I love the campus and the people I've meet so far! My feet (of course) are soar from walking miles and miles each day, but I know by the end of fall QUARTER (woohoo!) I should be in better shape...
I've been to all my classes and the teacher/students are very welcoming. The kids in the music school are smart asses which I love:) There's this kid Sean that is hilarious and also this dude Dan who is as equally funny. Both are in my classes and are friends with Tricia. (me and Tricia have been hanging out lately..who saw that one coming?) So I'm slowing meeting people outside my fundamentalist (that's right) roommate, Jodie. It's taking me some time to meet people, but like I said everyone I've meet so far is great in "their own way." I even meet up with some people in Hillel and went to an event! (gasp!) It was cool, and my friend Lyndsay introduced me to people. I meet this one guy that lives near me and was hilarious. We both ran for regional board and lost; and we were able to laugh about it. I'll probably attend Friday Night Services before my roommate tries to convert me! (side note: she's actually really cool, and anything is better than Ms. Rude, but really...I don't believe in Jesus and thus hell is my destination..?wtf)
My African Lit class is pretty cool, I like the teacher (who is a white woman with a 'calling' for African Lit..) I think I saw like maybe 3 black people in the entire class. (typical. you were right Christy) There's more detail associated with this class that I would love to drone on about, but I'll save it for another entry.
So today was interesting... I have been practicing pretty hard for my Jazz placement audition; rewriting and structuring chords, practicing my improvisation, voice-leading..etc. Then I get to the audition, and the guy says "Play what's written" Ok first off, I have NEVER been given that advice on a big band chart. Instructors usually say "Do not play what's written, figure out better voicing for chords!!" Even Mr. Baker said that. So you can imagine my surprise when I found out I actually had to read the music.. it was strange, and slightly annoying since I only looked at the chord changes. Basically what all this means is that I over prepared and made things more complicated..when really the level they expect is much lower than I thought. This thought made me very upset, seeing that my classes/lessons/teachers at dinky ol' Akron was MUCH more challenging. Next example; sophomore level classes are also easier than I expected. People in Ear Training couldn't even sing a natural/harmonic/melodic scale. It was very embarrassing. So lesson here; bigger is not always better. OSU might be all pretty and fancy, but the course load is not the challenge I was anticipating..and I need challenge. Right now, I'm really confused and so I'm definitely going to wait and see what unfolds this quarter(s). But these are my feelings, they are not facts.
OY!!
Okay that is it for me,
Cayce
