There have been unusually loud and persistent noises coming from the guts of the house this evening, so I poked around in the basement and realized it was the sump pump. However, no water was coming out of the hose. So, around midnight I threw my coat on over my bathrobe and checked it out. Sure enough, the hose was filled with ice.

Cracking the ice and swinging the house around didn't help, so I just yanked the hose off, and a loud burst of compressed air shot out of the pipe. There was an ominous pause, followed by an impressive gush of water.

I'm surprised that nothing like this has happened before, but I guess we don't usually get torrential rainstorms followed by sudden, drastic drops in temperature.

I must confess to a certain morbid curiosity as to what would have happened if I hadn't done anything...
