AFAIK, from a medical point of view this is unprecendented. I sorta wish I knew more about it. I kinda want to see what happens ( Read more... )

from what i can tell (and being SURROUNDED by FTM's all moments of the day, i've heard about this non-stop for days), this sort of thing happens a lot, but isn't publicized this way. and the publicity he's gone for is what has a lot of FTM's riled up.

How does it work with hormones and the like? It seems to me that the intrauterine environment couldn't help but be altered by the hormones used in transition.

That's what interests me about the case. I really wish I knew more about this stuff :\. From what I've heard, he stopped the hormonal therapy for the duration of the pregnancy, but I imagine (not sure on this point) that it would be built up in his system.

I also didn't know it happened often. o_o;; so much for "unprecedented". I wish I could see case studies on it.

IIRC he actually stopped taking testosterone for two years before he became pregnant--he stopped as soon as they decided to have a child, in order to bring on menstruation again.

It's happened before. Pat Califa's partner carried their child; Califa wrote a book about it.

I had no idea. :\ I feel kinda dumb about it now. But I'm still sort of fascinated by this from a scientific/medical perspective. Is that bad?

I didn't know about it either haha, it's just that I've seen Thomas Beatie stuff all over 932749845 communities that I watch, including useless_facts, booju_newju, sf_drama and totally unrelated comms, haha. Anecdotally I know of at least a dozen FtM guys who have had their own children in early- or mid-transition. But AFAIK there's been no organized effort to study the physical effects on either the men or their children.
