AFAIK, from a medical point of view this is unprecendented. I sorta wish I knew more about it. I kinda want to see what happens.
Personally, though, I don't get the Oprah thing, or the other major news appearances, or the general media hype, or the blogger furor. I don't really get why he went to the media about this at all. I've heard that it was possibly to raise awareness of gender issues and stuff, but I dunno.
From what little I do know, I think it's sweet that he's carrying the baby for his wife, but it's also probably rather dangerous.
I'm also interested to see what the fundies and the courts will do about the kid, if they'll find a way to take the kid away or what (I wouldn't be surprised, though I would be angry, wtf bitches get out of people's lives). I bet the fundies are having conniptions.
In other news, I may pay off one of my credit cards with my state refund, and I need to go grocery shopping. I also found an endocrinologist with UNM. We shall see what happens.
