Last week I read Booster Gold's first solo series, because. Honestly this character has turned into one of my absolute favorite characters ever. I adore and love him. Yes, he's flawed and has a massive ego, but I like him for his flaws as well as his strengths. I think he deserved to have a much longer run, especially the second time, but also the first run should have been longer than 25 issues.
Dan Jurgens has improved as a writer, or the general writing style changed, or a bit of both. It is really strange to go back and read something from the 80's after all the Convergence issues I've read lately.
I don't know what to say about it. I really enjoyed reading his first adventure. Seeing him when he became a hero for all the wrong reasons, but he is still a hero. He realizes early on that he really does want to help, he will help people not only because of publicity.
That's why I don't agree with people calling him unlikeable. Or maybe I've just read so much featuring him at this point that I am biased and will always like him. IDK.
I really liked his supporting cast though, and it's a bit of a shame that they seem to be forgotten about later?
I love the story when they went back to Booster's future. Just the fact that his sister Michell after finding out that her brother who essentially abandoned her and their mother, decides to steal a bus and come charging in to save Booster. Fuck, I love Michelle. I wish that she wasn't sidelined all the time. And I really wish she hadn't been killed. All it does is to further Booster's story. I fucking wish we'd gotten the two of them as superheroes together instead. It's my biggest problem with the series, other than that it's great.
Although the end is sort of ruined by having a bunch of crossovers.
Glad I read it though. It's got some problems... Okay, quite a few, but there aren't a lot of plot problems. And I like Booster. I love him. He's my favorite, and seeing his beginning was really nice.
I don't have a lot else to say specifically about this run though. I liked it. I think having read it fleshes out Booster even more and made me like him even more.
I spend a lot of time thinking about Booster and I wrote down some of those thoughts a few days ago. Since it's really short and just me musing about Booster and gender, and treatment of characters I'm leaving it outside of a cut.
I was thinking about Booster Gold , and about the letters to the letter column in his first solo book calling him an unlikeable character (which I don't necessarily agree with, but we all have different opinions), and Booster's line in Converge: Booster Gold about Kim Kardashian stealing his MO. And I started wondering what would have happened if Booster Gold had been a female character. Would they still be around 29 years later?
Would the way they were perceived and treated by other characters in universe as well as outside of it by the fans be the same or would it differ because of gender? Somehow I can't help think that comic book fans would be more vile and have a much more negative feelings towards the character if they were a woman. Mainly I was thinking of how often female characters are criticized for traits accepted in male favorites.
And in universe would they be treated with even less respect? It's actually hard seeing how they could be treated with less respect than Booster already is to be honest.
I'm just sort of curious about all of this and kinda want a gender swapped Booster now. Or not exactly Booster, but a female hero who wants the fame and wants to earn money from being a hero.
