It was a combination of lovely ceremony and chaos. I will be forever grateful that I got to be apart of everything and that I was moral support for her. So officially there where 4 events: signing the marriage contract, Turmeric smearing (this ceremony has a name that starts with an H but I can't spell it), wedding part 1 (her family hosts and she goes to his family's house) and wedding part 2 (his family hosts and she comes back to her parents house). This was a very non-traditional traditional wedding.
All of these events required HOURS of makeup. It was very hot and makeup does not like heat. I personally ended up not wearing any makeup other than lipstick. I was seriously impressed with her patience. Her attempt to resist looking pasty white and persistently dealing with extreme lateness. But at the end of the day everything looked lovely.
The best and most frustrating part was that every event my friend had to keep her eyes lowered. She said that this wasn't very hard since that false eyelashes she was wearing were very heavy. I was so surprise when they put the eyelashes on her at the salon because she already has really long eyelashes. The frustrating part for me was watching my friend in this demure role that's soooo not her and wondering why I felt a little twilight zoneish.
Here's a really interesting aside. I was the star of every event. Who cares about the bride everyone wanted a picture with me! I think I know what it's like to be famous. I had my own paparazzi (crazy cell phone camera pictures, so if you see a forwarded picture of me on the internet it can be traced back to bangladesh) taking pictures of me without my permission or sometimes without my knowledge. At one point there was a line of people wanting to take a picture of me. I learned that I could be pissed or think of it as a crazy part of the experience. Guess which position I took?
While I was in bangladesh I became a member of my friends family. I did my part to make sure things happened to the best of my lack of language abilities. Her family took me under their wings and tried to teach me some of the language which was fun. I would go back to bangladesh inspite of being stared at all the time and talked about all the time because I really liked my friend's family. I want to do the tourist bit of museums and monuments (Oh I saw the U.S. embassy, it a very large and lovely building). I would like to see the rural areas of bangladesh. Dhaka is a very metropolitan city. It has a mix of the old and new. Highrises, adobe building and lean-to huts. Very strong animal smells (if you catch my drift) and very very crowded. Traffic was thoroughly terrifying but really cool. The call to prayer was very beautiful but it never woke me up and prayer does not stop everyday life. I was very naive to think that things closed during prayer. I mean really it happens 5 times a day.
I could give you all the personal background issues that came up but I assume that everyone knows the frustrations that go along with weddings and inspite of how nice everything eventually went I am still a fan of elopement. Maybe a simple informal ceremony if a ceremony is important to you.
