Like Ms. Blixen, I'm Better at Hello
For the past two days I have definitely not been doing the Tim Conway shuffle. Oh no, I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to make sure I'm prepared to leave for California on Tuesday. My flight leaves out of RDU at a ridiculous hour (around 6:40 a.m.), so I'm questioning the need to even go to bed Monday night. Our house is a little over an hour from the airport and I have to be there an hour and a half before the plane is scheduled for take off, so that means we have to leave home by 4 in the morning and I'd have to be up by 3?! Aaaahhh! And I absolutely cannot sleep on planes...joy.
Well, I finally did watch The Hours again over Shabbat. It was wonderful. I sat there sipping my tea and taking it all in. My last bit of real relaxation at home until August. I also watched Julia (Meryl's very first movie, so she gets like two minutes of screen time) and The Deer Hunter over the weekend. I liked them both, although I felt like The Deer Hunter dragged in some places. It was good, but upsetting as well. My dad was in the army and did three tours (which is a year and a half) of Vietnam during the war. I mentioned to him that some sources I'd read say that The Deer Hunter makes the Viet-Cong out to be much worse than they actually were. He responded that the Viet-Cong were worse than I or any movie (he saw this one when it came out in '78) could possibly imagine. I believe him, but it's hard to imagine something worse than being forced to play Russian Roulette for someone else's amusement or brutally shooting at a mother carrying her child.
I called my grandmother tonight to say goodbye before I go. For some reason, she's still worried that BCI where I'm going is some sort of cult, just because she can't find anyone who's heard of the city of Brandeis (about 40 miles outside LA, and north of Malibu). Grandparents...like it isn't enough that I have my parents on my case worried over nothing all the time. *sigh!*
And Italy won the World Cup, much to the delight of Andrea, Oz and Jella, so yay. Shavua tov.
