Ugh. It seems as though it has been forever since my last entry. Currently in D.C. right now with the parentals on vacation. It's going...well, it's going, that's about all I can definitively say for the moment.
First impressions: not great. My cheap-ass mother booked us into this (how shall I say?)...quaint (yes, quaint, we'll go with that) inn or b&b whichever you prefer that just looks like two large apartment buildings stuck together. Definitely not hotel, which was what I was hoping for, but whatever. It's grown on me.
Yesterday was long and difficult. We went to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, which was great for me, my whole reason for coming to DC in the first place, but we had to walk all over the greater NW area to finally find where to take the right bus back to our incredibly random b&b. Things started looking up after that though. I talked to Rabbi Sharon (finally!) and we seemed to get things settled over my conversion. We're now going with Friday, September 22, two days after the date I had originally wanted, since her family will be in town for High Holy Days (how lucky for me!). I was so relieved to talk that over with her. Also, I managed to procure Meryl's AFI compilation from e-Bay even though the auction had already ended (score!). I did not, however, win the autographed picture of her I wanted, complete with a CoA and everything, but oh well. The person who did end up getting it had to pay close to $40 with the shipping, and I can't exactly be shelling out that kind of money for one picture.
Today was definitely better. We went to the Smithsonian and saw the castle, the Ripley center and the Freer and Sackler art galleries. Tomorrow we'll go back and hit up the Hirshorn, African Art and American History. I was pooped. I mean really, how many pieces of pottery can you reasonably look at before my attitude turns into, 'Eh, you've seen one pot, you've seen 'em all?' And I'm the one who loves this kind of stuff! Holy crap, lunch was ridunkulously expensive, over $30 between the three of us. I swear, these museums definitely know how to get money from you even if you don't buy something in the gift shop.
Figuring out the metro was, um, an experience, but at least now we have some semblance of looking like we know what we're doing. It was McDonald's for dinner, because quite frankly, we can't be spending over $30 on lunch and over $20 on dinner every day. That's just ridiculous. Last night I saw this AFI 100 Years 100 Cheers thing on CBS, I guess it was supposed to be the 100 greatest feel good movies or whatever. Anyway, Silkwood was #66 on the list, so that was exciting, although I thought some of her other movies should definitely have made the cut too, like Music of the Heart and Out of Africa. Oh well. I'm actually looking forward to today, I have high hopes that it'll be good. We'll see if I'm right.
