Several days ago, I noticed a problem with my dining room light and ceiling fan. I am uncertain why, but the unit failed utterly. Both the light and the fan were non-functional. When I checked the voltage at the switches, it was only 100 Volts. (For those of you unfamiliar with American house electricity, it should be between 110 and 130 Volts.) I then decided to check the voltage at the breaker box. The voltage there was 121 volts across that particular breaker. So I decided to check it at the fan this morning before I went to work. There it was also 100 volts, until I disconnected the remote control unit. :-p I'm not sure what was going on, but that stupid device which allowed the ultimate in decadent laziness was preventing the rest of the fan and light unit from functioning. Once I bypassed that piece of exceedingly fallible technology, the unit worked perfectly.
Alas, this was not my only electronic conundrum today. At work, I had to battle a belligerent printer intent on "confunding" me into thinking it was actually working. This unit has been troublesome off and on for about a week now. I'm thinking it may be time for the reverse swing press. (For those of you unfamiliar with a reverse swing press, it is a very useful tool found in most tool boxes. It consists of a head, often made of metal, with a relatively flat striking surface attached to a usually short wooden pole. For whatever reason, most hardware stores market it as a "hammer".)
Then, this evening was even more fun. I went over to a friend's place for dinner and to install a new DVD burner. The dinner was quite good, but the DVD burner may be another candidate for the reverse swing press. Fortunately, it is still well within warranty. It just cost me a bit more time than I was hoping to spend upon this project. *sigh* Oh well. At least I had chance to chat with my friend while I cursed at the DVD drive. I think tomorrow will be a better day. :-)
