This afternoon while I was standing in the kitchen looking out at the back field, a ruby-throated hummingbird came to peruse our garden. He buzzed by the kitchen window at face level, and we had a staring match for a couple of surprised blinks. Then he buzzed away. I have never been so close to a hummingbird before.
