Electric Lady - Janelle Monáe (Song)
My idea of “Electric Lady” is it’s about the narrator flirting with another character (most likely a female android, known here as the “Electric Lady”) who already has other admirers. But the narrator succeeds, and they go off on adventures. And there’s some sort of initiation ceremony near the end of the song. Feel free to take some ideas from my idea of the song, or go with something different! It’s all up to you.
PYNK - Janelle Monáe (Music Video)
(Content notes: sexual content for both song and video, as explained below. Also, link has the “poem” from the Emotion Picture; please ignore that bit for this request.)
“PYNK” is a very sexual song, with a bit of maybe telling off a male character for trying to intrude into a relationship with the narrator and her female partner. But I think a lot about what’s going on in the PYNK Motel with this video. You can focus on the history of the hotel; how it ended up being built in this pink desert, who ran it in the past, and who runs it now. You can focus on the various areas of the motel seen in the video (at least the dining room, the pool, and a room). You can focus on how the other women in the desert ended up at the motel, or how Jane 57821 (Monáe’s character), Zen (Tessa Thompson’s character), and their companions found this motel. Jane is seen in some scenes hanging out with the other people in this motel alone-what’s Zen doing while Jane is doing those things, and why have they decided to separate? You can focus on the scene with the dancers in those pants (and some with the pink baseball bats), or the scenes with Jane and Zen in the desert in the pink sweatshirts. I wouldn’t even mind a story about the cat that briefly appears in the video. I know this video is nonlinear, so don’t feel like you have to include every element (including all the lyrics) into your fanwork.
Q.U.E.E.N. - Janelle Monáe (Music Video)
There’s so much going on in this video; don’t feel like you have to cover everything (including the lyrics). The start of the video has Monáe and Badoula Oblongata (and others) captured and placed in a museum; how did they get caught? Then there are the girls at the start of the video who fight the guards in the museum and start playing the song; who are they and how did they know how to find and reanimate Monáe and Badoula? Cindi Mayweather and her sisters also show up in the video (they’re the ones that look like one of the covers of The Electric Lady); what are they doing there? Or you can focus on that bit where Monáe sings about Mary; what is Monáe’s relationship to Mary here? (I know there’s a reoccurring motif in regards to a “Mary” of some sort appearing in Monáe’s works, but don’t feel like you have to attempt to connect the Marys of the Chase Suite and/or Zen [Mary Apple 53] for this assignment.)
Rich - Maren Morris (Music Video)
The song is about a narrator tired of their male partner’s BS, but I love the direction the video goes in. Morris plays this outlaw who’s duping people in this town during the time of the Wild West in the United States. I’d love to see more of the scenes where Morris’s character is confronting the people she’s swindling, and what she’s doing in this town.
Party of One - Brandi Carlile (Music Video)
(Note: Just to be clear, this is not the version of the song with Sam Smith as a guest vocalist.)
Carlile has described the song for “Party of One” as “if you ever want to know what would happen if you had a catastrophic fight with your spouse and then you stayed up all night getting drunk and listening to Joni Mitchell.” The video features, presumably, two married women (one played by Elisabeth Moss), having some sort of a spat that causes Moss’s character to nearly walk out on her partner. What was this spat about in the video? How was this couple’s relationship prior to the spat? What happens after the video?
Nights Like This - Kehlani ft. Ty Dolla $ign (Music Video)
“Nights Like This” is about the singer, who has broken up with her female partner, still thinking about her female partner after the female partner is now in a relationship with a male partner. The video features a mysterious female being who has crash-landed on Earth. Kehlani plays someone who lives in a spacious house and who’s clever enough to attempt to help this being. Ty Dolla $ign assists Kehlani’s character. I wonder about the female alien here-where is she from? Has she done what she’s done with Kehlani’s with other creatures, let alone humans? What does this being do at the end of the video, now that she’s stolen Kehlani’s character’s body? I also would love a history of this house, or other people Kehlani’s character has tried to help prior to this alien character’s appearance in this video, or any background for Ty Dolla $ign’s character.
New Rules - Dua Lipa (Music Video)
The song for “New Rules” is about a woman refusing to go back to an old relationship. The video compliments the song, but through a very eccentric motel, probably somewhere in Los Angeles. I’d love details on what brought the narrator to this very eccentric motel, and, quite possibly, her attempts to try to fall back into her old habits. Or this motel’s history-what lead the person who founded this motel to start a place where everything is synchronized to presumably dance the pain of failed relationships away. Or even how these crazy dancing rituals started.
Bad Blood - Taylor Swift (Music Video)
I feel there are so many directions you can take with this video. Don't be afraid to center on one part of it instead of trying to write a fic for the whole thing. I'd like any story you can come up with for this video. The organization that Catastrophe's a part of--how did it come to be? How and why did Arsyn and Catastrophe partner up, and why did Arsyn betray Catastrophe? How did The Trinity nurse Catastrophe back to health after she was betrayed? And how did The Trinity encourage her to exact revenge on Arsyn? Is she still present in Catastrophe's life after Catastrophe trains to exact revenge? What happens after the video ends? Or what about the other characters in the video?
break up with your girlfriend i'm bored - Ariana Grande (Music Video)
The song is about a jealous female narrative who wants another person to break up with a male partner. The video, however, has a character played by Grande observing a woman who looks like her doppelgänger at a party, probably somewhere in Los Angeles. The video suggests the narrator wants the doppelgänger to break up with her male partner to be with Grande instead. I have many different interpretations of this video. There’s the straightforward one of Grande rejecting relationships for self love instead, and I imagine, maybe, elements of this party are in Grande’s head-like Grande is actually at this party, thinking of being with a male partner or actually being with one, and something’s holding her back from breaking up. I also see it as Grande’s character literally trying to seduce this doppelgänger at a party because she’s attracted to this doppelgänger in some way. And I feel that you can add sci-fi elements to the narrative; maybe the doppelgänger is a clone, or a robot/android, or something else, and she was created to irritate Grande’s character in some way. You can use any or all of my ideas, or you can use your own take for this music video.
Apeshit - The Carters (Music Video)
“APESHIT” is mostly a song about bragging about wealth and status, but the video is something mostly separate from its song. It’s Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and various dancers posing and dancing in front of paintings (with mostly white subjects) in the Louvre. I feel the video is about how the achievements of people from the African diaspora (and, in this case, African Americans) are often ignored throughout history. But I feel you can take a fantastic spin on this video, making the dancers (and Jay-Z and Beyoncé) tourists or ghosts (or anything else you wish them to be) in the Louvre rebelling against the paintings inside. Or you can play this video more straightforwardly and have this be someone’s fantasy as they walk around the Louvre.
