Yuletide reveals 2018
This year I wrote one of the Better Call Saul fics, the Mr. Robot fic, and one of the Dirty Computer Emotion Picture fics.

Summary: Gene imagines what might happen if somehow Kim made it out to the Cinnabon he manages.
(Before I start, if you’re not familiar with BCS, it’s a prequel to Breaking Bad, Jimmy McGill, Saul Goodman, and Gene v are all the same person. Jimmy is a conman trying to be an honest lawyer, but he reverts to cons to help him and other people out and gets disbarred for a time. He cons his way back to law and uses the alias “Saul Goodman” to practice. When Walter White’s criminal empire starts crumbling near the end of Breaking Bad, Saul leaves Albuquerque and takes on a new alias and job: Gene, mall Cinnabon manager. Fun fact: the Cinnabon in the Albuquerque mall BCS filmed the Cinnabon scenes has since closed, alas.)
pique was open to the idea of a possibility of Jimmy and Kim maybe meeting post-BCS. Inspired by this, I came up with a scenario where Gene, after one of his Cinnabon shifts (prior to season four), goes back to his home and watches his old Better Call Saul commercials, but dreams up scenarios of Kim to attempt to distract him from his pain.

I really wanted to write this treat, since it’s been a while since I wrote for Mr. Robot, and I really like Dom and Darlene together. It took me a while to come up with an idea from this treat, but I finally settled on something set after season three that might get Jossed, with Dom still unable to loosen up enough to actually talk to other people, a repentant Dominique, and Alexa being Alexa.

notbecauseofvictories was open with anything for Dirty Computer. Originally, as I lost track of time while writing this, and the standalone video for “Crazy, Classic, Life” came out, I was only going to do something based on that part of that music video. (The music videos from Dirty Computer have all come from the Emotion Picture. Except for the “love poem” bit from “Pynk,” which was cut from the single version of the music video.) I felt like that idea required world-building I had no time for, so I scrapped that idea and went with another idea I had-Zen in the House of the New Dawn, learning about her past self as Jane tells Zen Zen’s story.
In writing this fic, I relied on a lot of Janelle Monáe’s interviews on her thoughts on various things in the Emotion Picture, as well as observations to references to The Holy Mountain from other people. There are a lot of references to The Holy Mountain in the Emotion Picture; for this fic, I stuck with only coming up with a gang inspired by, but not actually like, the Alchemist (and others like him) from that movie.
