My gifts, a post-season one look at Eve after season one of Killing Eve, and a smutty look at Josie and Anya from Annihilation (Garland 2018), are here.

Here are my other recs from this year’s Yuletide. Fandoms: Horror of Dracula, The Americans (TV), AHS: Hotel, Annihilation (Garland 2018), Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, JS&MN (TV), Moonlight (2016), Pied Piper of Hamelin, Rosemary and Thyme, Thoroughbreds, Fallen London, lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to.

Horror of Dracula (a.k.a. Dracula) (1958): Fascination [Jonathan Harker & Van Helsing (Hammer), Arthur Holmwood, Lucy Holmwood, Mina Holmwood; not rated; Archive warning: Graphic Depictions Of Violence] Set before the movie, this is a rollicking adventure where Harker and Van Helsing assist a stranger, only to learn disturbing things about their new client.

The Americans (TV): Childish Things [Paige Jennings & Henry Jennings; Stan Beeman/Renee Beeman; Teen] I liked most of this year’s Americans fics, but this is my absolute favorite, a piece focused on Paige set after the show (and, specifically, after Paige returns to Cynthia’s safe-house after refusing to go to Russia with her parents) which felt like, to me, it could work as a stand-alone episode/movie for The Americans.

American Horror Story: Hotel: A Thing that Would Last [John Lowe/James Patrick March; Teen; Archive warning: Major Character Death] I really like this fic, which imagines Lowe’s afterlife living in the Hotel Cortez after the end of his life.

Annihilation (Garland 2018): Flowers Wrapped Tightly Around Hands Intertwined [Josie Radek/Anya Thorensen; Explicit] Sexy AU where Josie and Anya fall in love and decide to escape the Shimmer instead of being consumed by it.

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace: The Darkplace Christmas Special [Thornton Reed, Rick Dagless, Liz Asher, Lucien Sanchez, Dean Learner, Garth Marenghi; General Audiences] This fic nails the tone of this canon with its hypothetical Christmas episode (ridiculous, not actually scary). And there’s a hilarious Doctor Who-related Easter egg in this one, too.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (TV): Dangers Along the Way [John Childermass/John Segundus; Mature] Delightful post-canon story where Segundus saves Childermass’ life from fairies.

Moonlight (2016 movie): Fifty Ways to Make a Record [Chiron/Kevin, Kevin Jr., Samantha, Teresa; Teen] A fic after Chiron and Kevin get together after the movie, looking into the lives of all these characters.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin: Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) [Teen; Archive warning: Graphic Depictions of Violence] This creepy retelling of this fairy tale features a dance craze gone horribly wrong.

Rosemary and Thyme: a walk in the woods [Rosemary Boxer, Laura Thyme; General Audiences] Rosemary and Thyme in a charming adventure not seen in the show, traveling in the snow when, unfortunately, their Jeep breaks down.

Thoroughbreds: Twitch [Lily Reynolds/Amanda; Mature; creator chose not to use Archive warnings] What might’ve happened if the two of them ended up in Brookmore. I was impressed with how this fic nailed the tone of this movie.

Fallen London: The Well in the Forgotten Quarter [Teen; creator chose not to use Archive warnings] From the Madness collection: A drabble that perfectly captures the spirit of what it’s like to Seek the Name in this game.

lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to: Alchemy [Studying Girl; General Audience] A fantastic drabble about what would happen if this girl in this live radio station channel needed answers in a hurry.
