something to say...

Now I have something to say.
And I am sure that many fans feel attacked, I think it is necessary to say it now
and to those who feel disturbed by that: I'm sorry that you had to read it.
However I have to vent my anger.

I just want to say that I can't understand how people can prejudge the "The Cry Against" preview with a footage of just one ( Read more... )

Wall-o-text. (My stance; this isn't just directed at you, but what you said made me think. lol) mousoucarnival July 24 2010, 19:33:31 UTC

I've always taken Merry's samples with a considerable grain of salt. XD;

Seriously though, I'm well-aware that by now that some people can take more from a sample than I personally can! Anything else in life we tend to sample can be that way, I suppose. You hate the taste, you hate the scent, you move on. With the way I've cared for these guys though, it's unthinkable that I could personally come to any sort of "final" judgment until I've heard it (in HQ) for myself, yeah? But again, that's me. I'll gladly respect others' opinions if they respect mine, and generally that's not been anything resembling an issue, at least where this sort of thing is concerned.

So am I inclined to agree with OP? Perhaps somewhat. I feel a lot of the reactions have been overblown for what little we've been given, but keep in mind that I'm operating from my mindset of "this has still yet to come together as a whole", it's inherently difficult for me to understand.
However, I DO understand the knee-jerk reaction to it. In all honesty, I share much of what you and lem0nlight feel on the issue, but when I heard another sample, I tried my damnedest to come at it with a clean slate. I'll be doing the same when the single is released.

Do I want to like it? Of course.
Have I liked what I've heard so far? I'd make myself a liar to say that I've been particularly pleased.
Will I be reserving final judgment for the actual release? Yes.
I personally hope others will still give it a go, too. If they don't, though, that's fine. I can't deny that they've changed, and in all that, it's just natural that they're going to lose fans.

I haven't really done more than skim the responses to the music share posts, but what I saw was hardly what I'd call overreacting. Strong opinions, certainly, but the OP seems to be taking it just a little bit personally, as some fans who are very invested in a band tend to do before they get some perspective that it's not the end of the world when fans stop being fans of a band for whatever reason, or criticize the latest release.

I mean, as much as I want to like some songs because I like the band, as in the case of cocklobin and 9GOATS, if their recent stuff doesn't click with me then that's usually it, though I might keep trying to like the newer songs after a disappointing release for a while until, as in the case of Merry and D'espairsRay, I can pretty much determine that I'm done trying. :|

Eh, I dunno, I just don't really see a few people criticizing the latest music samples as something warranting a complaint post about the criticism. Seems to me that it's blowing it out of proportion just a bit, but then I'm kind of too jaded to care what others think of stuff I like. I saw people dissing songs I loved and I just... ignored it, y'know?

Are you speaking of the most recent posts by OP within the last few days, perhaps? I was actually taking this back to May, and the events that transpired in the wake of their live that month along with the subsequent announcements of their label change and now-infamous initial "The cry against..." single sample. There's been fairly significant build-up. Things had changed considerably and there was a lot to take in at once. That there is what I referred to as "overblown". Poor word choice, perhaps.

Nevertheless, people have generally cooled down, and a lot of what they've said makes sense to me. I think this post needs to exist so people can express their feelings, even if they do happen to be primarily negative towards the band*/release. I feel this lends more perspective than anything else.

I get that though, I do. Sometimes it's just time to move on. I guess I just hope, as with any long-term relationship, that if there's any compelling motivation to keep trying, that you'll keep up, however casual things might become. People all deal with these sorts of things in their own way though..

While I may have mixed feelings about the post on a personal level, I'm not out to censor anyone. As a moderator, I have that responsibility above all.

Edit: *by "band", I meant their direction, not the unit or as individuals.

I've stayed out of most Jrock comms for the past year and a half, so yeah, I missed that kerfluffle back in May. I'll go look for it later if I have the energy.

Heh, yeah, with bands I've liked since basically their first single I do try harder to accept and like their newest stuff, but sometimes I just lose interest because the music is either bland or a hot mess of noise.

I went and listened to Merry's releases since their self-titled album, and as I pretty much said before, aside from around three or four songs, it was either "blah" or "ow, my ears" (and in the latter case I still couldn't get through the whole song before I had to skip it). 8|

I still like them as a band, but I'm just about done with their music. :/ I do hold out a small flicker of hope they'll snap out of this phase and go back to being awesome so I can like them again, but I'm not holding my breath. I think a lot of the emotion from fans criticizing the music stems from how disappointing their music has been lately compared to the awesomeness of the past, and this latest release is just the straw that broke the camel's back for some.

I don't think that's it actually. If this was somehow expected by them slowly deteriorating (in most people's opinion), fans wouldn't have been nearly as upset. It's precisely because it came out of nowhere. At least to me. :/

If you ask me, I think you're both right.
For some it's been building and this was the breaking point, the fact that it came as such a shock made it hard for even the most stalwart fans to take in the chin. Once the dust settled, people figured out where they stood. I think that's about where we are. They claimed they were a "new" band, I guess it just comes with the territory. Doesn't make it any less sad though. :/

I've actually been kinda wondering what you thought of Merry's new direction, and this sort of answers it, lol.
