Survival Kit Q&A:
1. The government of Ecuador is a presidential republic. The president is Rafael Correa and the vice-president is Lenín Moreno. Other prominent people in Ecuador are Francisco Segura, professional tennis player, Oswaldo Guayasamin, famous artist, José Joaquín de Omedo y Maruri, poet and statesman and Hernan "Chico" Borja, retired Ecuadorian soccer player and current soccer coach.
5. The predominant religion of Ecuador is Roman Catholic, however, in rural parts of Ecuador sometimes indigenous beliefs and Christianity are mixed. There is also a number of Mormons and Protestants as well as a minority population of Muslims and Jews. There seems to be a tolerance of other religions - many Jews have done very well in Ecuador. I have not read any sacred writings from this country.
7. In Ecuador it is a luxury to have an animal in your home and treat it like a child. Often pets in Ecuador run free and are fed meat scraps for this reason, not because the people do not care about the animals.
8. In Ecuador, there are three choices for people wanting to get married. The first is a civil marriage, which is the legal form of marrying two people. The second is a religious marriage, which usually means a marriage sanctified by the Catholic church, and the third is a civil union, which happens when a couple decide to form a family without going through any official ceremony. Couples in civil unions are given the same rights as any other married couples.
10. Gambling seems to be much like it is here in the United States in Ecuador. People enjoy it and there are casinos you can go to if you like gambling and poker. People also bet on football games, but the centers that operate these activities are probably operating illegally. The attitude towards drinking is different, however. Alcoholism is a widespread problem affecting family life, traffic, and the economy. In 1996, the president passed a new law concerning unlimited consumption of alcohol. Since then it is forbidden to serve alcohol on Sundays and all bars have to close their doors at 2 am. The attitude towards drugs is also completely different. In Ecuador, the consumption of drugs is not penalized. The drug user is not punished, but the drug trafficker is.
