Summary: Their first kiss.
Author's notes: Third in a series of stories for some of my favourite pairings’ first kisses. I meant for them to be all in one drabble post but have decided I just don’t do drabbles. :D All unbetaed so bizarre spelling and grammar all down to me.
It had become a habit, walking together back to her quarters after meals, movies, coffees. Rarely intended when they had first started talking to each other as Kate and John, but now a routine and stability in this demanding part of the universe they called home.
Kate heard the rumours about the way they left together, but she was afraid to say that none of them were true. At least not in practice. In feeling, she thought, there was a lot of truth. But they were two people who perhaps weren’t ready for it. Or at least he wasn’t. She was pretty sure she would like to prove those rumours correct now. John... well, old demons were holding him back she was certain.
And she didn’t want to push him, or make him act before he was ready. But, as they reached her door again, she was also becoming aware, as much through their friendship as much her training, that he was not likely to ever make a move. Not all the time he had any doubt about the nature of her feelings.
They lingered, as they had started to do after the increasingly slow walks back to this point.
“I’d better get going,” he said, obviously not really wanting to leave but unable to think of a legitimate reason to stay.
“Early start,” confirmed Kate.
“Yeah.”
Kate felt the moment come over her. Now or never. She stilled his movement away from her by resting her hand gently on his arm, and before he could allow the question from his eyes pass to his lips she pressed hers on them. She felt a start, and then his body relax, even though she continued to only touch him in through those two points of contact. At that realisation she felt herself relax too. She had made the right decision. She could feel it.
But it wasn’t time to push anything. She pulled back. Besides she needed to know that he truly felt what his body language was telling her.
She looked at him. He looked gratifyingly dazed which made her want to grin insanely. Instead she said simply, “Your turn next time.” She turned and headed into her quarters. Once the doors had swished closed behind her she let that grin out and for a while let herself imagine exactly what he might do ‘next time’.
