Arthur and Merlin have been together for some time, but one day Arthur decides that Camelot needs a Queen, and therefore they should end their relationship. After telling Merlin about it, he proposes to Gwen. Sometime after that Arthur and his Knights go on a patrol, and Merlin, of course, goes with them. They get ambushed and Merlin is seriously injured in the fight.
