Hello loverlies! London is brilliant! It has been a jam-packed week and a half here in the UK. I've uploaded some pics on Facebook, so take a look at what I've been doing!
I live in a part of London where you can't move ten feet without seeing a theatre. The whole program went to see "Mary Poppins" over the weekend. It was delightful, except for the creepy life-sized toys that danced around the stage. Awesome part: Bert danced up the stage wall and *upside-down* across the stage ceiling! I want to see Spamalot, but tickets are 60 quid (about $120) so we'll have to see about that.
For the most part though, the thrills are pretty inexpensive! The pubs here are amazing. You can walk in, grab a pint, and make about ten new friends in seconds. Last night, Meagan (my flatmate) and I went to the Fitzroy and our friend bought a round. We talked to these guys from Spain and Ireland who extended us an invite to a "secret club." It is called the Button Down something or other and changes location every week. You can't get in without an invitation, so they gave us a copy of the invite and their numbers. Um... score?! So, we got a group together (BTW, my flatmates all ROCK!) and headed down several sketchy streets until we found The Key. It was packed and the music was HOT! We danced all night. The only downer was that it took forever to get drinks, but the beer here is so much more potent that it all evened out.
The day before I went to Canary Wharf with my flatmate, Meagan, and a neighbor, Jacob. Canary Wharf is on the River Thames. It was absolutely beautiful in that dreary London way. I wish that Ben would have been there with me, because it was also very romantic. I put a few pics on Facebook, but they do not do the experience justice. The best part was the water taxi that we took up the Thames to the London Bridge. We went under Tower Bridge and ended up not paying for the ride by some stroke of luck!
In the midst of all my wanderings, I have begun my internship in a Reception classroom. The children are between the ages of 4 and 5 and are complete darlings. My teacher is a lovely Polish lady and I hope that we will form the kind of relationship that I had with my mentor in the States. Things are so different here! Everything's more disciplined and regimented. I'm more relaxed, so this will be quite an adjustment.
Just a hint: If you ever come to London, remember that the word "pants" means underwear here. Therefore, when coming in from the rain, one should refrain from saying, "Oh my! My pants are soaked through!"
I love and miss you all! Email me: aem02c@fsu.edu!
Cheers!
