A few years ago, I remember reading an article about a high school girl who decided to go without makeup. According to the article, it inspired a lot of women to "be brave" and go barefaced into the world.

At the time I thought it was silly. As a person who only wore makeup occasionally, what was the big deal about going without? Yes, it's your face. You were born with it and that's what you look like. Why are you embarrassed that you're not wearing eyeshadow?

After studying abroad in Japan, I started to get more interested in planning my outfits and doing makeup. It wasn't to cover up my face, it was just fun. Painting! With glitter! That you get to wear! Fun, right? I also began regularly doing my nails - I haven't had bare nails in years, because I love painting fun designs and patterns.

I began interning at a company downtown, and of course I wore makeup every day. I wanted to look put-together and professional, to make a good impression. Everyone I worked with had perfect makeup, hair and clothes.

I've been in the professional world a few years now, and every work day I take time out of my morning to put on at least some makeup.

This morning I forgot. I don't know how-I got dressed, ate breakfast and got everything together like normal. I realized as I walked into the office that I had nothing on my face except my face.

It was embarrassing! After rummaging through my purse I found lipgloss and nothing else. I put it on and felt a little bit better.

What power it has over me! When did this happen? I looked in the mirror at work and felt bad.

The girl in high school, the brave one in the article years ago, I think I understand now. She was trying to get control back.
