Apparently the LCBO (pronounced Lick-boe, if you like, or "booze boutique") is fixing to have a strike.GUYS. That's the government liquor chain, the only one there is. THE HORROR. And of course now is when I think to myself, man, it'd be nice to have some cider in the fridge ( Read more... )

I assumed both "Lick-bo" and "LEE-see-bo" came from inserting random vowel sounds to make LCBO pronounceable -- but "L-i-C(k)-BO" assumes a hard C and defaults to a more relaxed near-close near-front vowel after the L (or uses it because of the similarity to "liquor") where "L-ee-Cee-BO" assumes soft C/C pronounced like the letter and adds the high front vowel after the L for balance/rhyme and to allow for stress on the first syllable...

Lease-bo then, if I were just putting a vowel in to get a soft c. Or just a schwa. Luh-ce-bo, Luh-cee-bo. Hm.

But it probably doesn't bear too much thinking about. *g*

You can't put your stress on a schwa, though. You'd need a caret, or to move the stress, and if you do that it starts to sound like "placebo," which is...there's a joke in there somewhere but it's not coming to me.
