Hi, hi!

0. Sooooooon it are my birthday. \m/ I will be AFK after tonight, though, until later Monday, as I'm going up to the cottage, where the interwebs are not. Loooong weekend!

1. YESTERDAY it was the natal day of the illustrious and awesome
queue. I hope you chillaxed in style. ♥

1. In other news, I am musing on scientific rigour, today. On Wednesday I attended part of a small symposium here at Ye Institute of Science with a very broad interdisciplinary schedule. I was obliged to attend my boss' closing talk, but before him I listened to a prof describe her work, which was a systematic review of many psychology papers (she was not a great speaker, and so probably made her conclusions appear even more wishy-washy).

Dudes, I can't even imagine trying to apply fidelity measures to and make conclusions out of something that soft. I mean, FIRST of all there isn't even harmony in terminology (she was looking into measures of "emotional distress" in certain patients which was only addressed directly or by another name on a third of the papers concerned), which renders any quality rubric almost useless. I'm not quite into paper scoring ANYWAY, since it's so subjective. And how the heck to the psych researchers get away with publishing such weaksauce data, honestly? The conclusion basically was what the meta-analysis was trying to answer for -- psych studies, being self-reported, voluntary, and using many different approaches, offer no insights in sum, and that this shit needs to be tightened up.

Biochemistry is a miracle of hard analysis, in comparison, which is a distinction it doesn't often earn, especially if you ask the physical science guys. I have a new appreciation for mere noise and artifacts. And maybe that my data is not as goofy as all that. :P

2. Why to all the labware company reps come by on Thursdays?

3. Butter chicken is the greatest food ever invented.

5.
zabira sent this NYTimes article about Toronto, which makes me yearn for fangirls to lead around on the TTC to see stuff. People should come visit me and we can go. Also, Daniel MacIvor is having his films played at Cinematheque this month, and I'd so be there if I wasn't busy like whoa. \trawno/

8. Oh god is this work day over yet? Geez.

13. I feel the lack of something fannish to say, here. It is Flashpoint night, though! \o/ Aaaand... I'm reading Desolation Island, now. \books/ I must remember to take my iPod charger to the cottage or I will be sad indeed, without books or all the dS fic I've hoarded on there with Stanza.

21. So how are you, flist?! Tell me fun things, fannish things, or give me worksafe linky or something. I'm bored.

rambly, z is my favourite, food, books, no value, scientific progress goes 'boink'?, work, segues are for the weak, birthdays, rl, daniel macivor, toronto, the thing about me is i'm kind of a dork
