Last night I went to a concert held by the inimitable Jonathan Coulton, with Paul and Storm opening. Those folks sang a song about how they were the opening band (I swear, I never went to such a self-conscious show; Coulton did that sort of thing, too), as well as my dear favorite, Your Love Is. They also had a pirate song where the audience had to “arrrr” along; they kept interrupting themselves to make pirate jokes, too. Never heard so many gleeful arrrr-ers before.
Jonathan Coulton himself sang about Ikea (a scary place - I went by the one in Brooklyn yesterday and it seemed more like fairyland than a place to buy furniture. I mean, there was a special room for children where they all watched TV and bounced up and down and stuff, as far as I could tell. And tons of cheap furniture, food, plants, stuffed animal squids… Yeah, all that stuff you’d expect.). And, of course, he did Skullcrusher Mountain and Re: Your Brains. Nothing quite like a scruffy guy with an acoustic guitar singing about how his henchmen say he shouldn’t kill you... yet. He wanted the audience to sing the brains song with him, all zombie-like, but we were still rather caught up in being pirates.
Arrrr.
