So this girl that went to my 1st college has a horrible tragedy happen last week. I didn't really know her because she came after I transferred, but I have been facebook stalking her for years. We have alot of mutual friends. She is 22, a newly wed, and a recent college graduate. Her husband has a sudden massive stroke last week. He was also 22, healthy, I believe he was even in the army. As many of you know, my mother passed away from a leak in her brain a few years ago, so this really hit home for me. I feel compelled to pass the message on. If you could say a prayer or a thought to your higher power. I just can't imagine what this young couple is goin through.

I am writing this to clear up and let people know about what happened to my husband on Tuesday Nov. 4th. I apologize for those who have contacted me that I have not gotten back to. I appreciate your concern, but have been on the clock watching Adam in the ICU basically 24/7 since tuesday night.
Adam was at the gym on tuesday working out his back as he usually does and all of the sudden he felt a pop in his head. It got bad and worse quickly and so he went to our friend that worked at the gym and told him to call and ambulance. His face and right side of the body began going numb, and he was rushed to the hospital at Ft. Campbell.
In the ER the conducted a CT scan and found that he had a good amount of bleeded in the stem of his brain, and immediately flew him to Vanderbilt hospital. In the neurological ICU they determined Adam had a stroke at the age of 22, and completely healthy.
It has been determined that the stroke was caused by a small group of weak cells in the brain that less than 1% of the population have. The group of cells has been in his head forever, and decided to manifest itself this past week.
The bleeding is all the in brain stem which is a very small important part of the brain that controls motor functions. His entire right side of the body is numb, as well as his entire face. His eyes have a very hard time staying open, and they don't work together well. His speech is slurred and labored, but he has not lost any cognitive ability. He can tell you exactly what happened at the gym on Tuesday night, and old memories, as well as names, etc. He is all there, but is having a hard time with basic physical things like walking, sitting, standing, speaking etc. There is basically a bruise on his brain stem, and as the blood slowly is absorbed back into the brain he should loose the numbness etc.
The grouping of weak cells have the potential to burst again, so Adam will be getting radio-therapy (laser surgery) to hopefully rid his bod entirely of it. However it may take three years with the radio therapy before it works, and during those three years there is a threat of a reoccurence.
He is doing much better then the beginning of this week. Getting up with help to sit in a chair, and feed himself, and walking to the bathroom. He gets tired very easily and needs plenty of rest to have his words come out and sound the way he wants them to, but the doctor said we'd see 1% improvement a day, and we have seen the change for sure.
To all of you reaching out...thank you. This is a huge change to our lives at the moment, and not what I thought I'd be doing in the first 4 months of marriage, but I am more than happy to do it.
Please keep my husband in your thoughts and prayers, and hopefully I will be able to get online a little bit to respond/update.
Thanks,
Karrie Helm
