'Trans' v 'transgender'

(If this sort of thing is your bag)

So how would you distinguish between the terms 'trans' and 'transgender'?

Is 'trans' the umbrella term and 'transgender' one of the things that is included in it, along with transsexual?

Wikipedia reckons that since the 1980s 'transgender' has been an umbrella term, including transsexuals. This would suggest that 'trans' is just an abbreviation of 'transgender'

The source I'm starting with is, I think, using 'transgender' in contrast to 'transsexual' as people who are *not* changing their sex, just their gender. Wikipedia (nothing quick-and-dirty going on here, oh no) suggests that some transsexual people reject the term transgender for this reason. That might suggest that trans is a better umbrella.

And are genderqueer, bigendered etc also under the (rainbow coloured golfing, I'm imagining) trans/gender umbrella? Or does there definitely need to be a sense of change over the lifecourse for trans to be applicable? I don't need to sort that one out, thankfully, but I'm interested.

Obv all contested, complex, context-specific, variable, flexible, fluid, negotiated, and wibbly-wobbly, but I've got to say something fairly definitive in one sentence.

queer, words
