You know I said...

not in any imminent need of any method of timing contractions
Well that was clearly the charm.

As many of you already know, I had the baby early this morning. It was a much better labour and birth than with PB (although still bloomin' hard work and not something I'm keen to repeat, certainly not in the at-all-even-distantly-foreseeable future).  I may write up an Official Birth Story in a few days when I've had a little more sleep and can sit down for longer.

The baby appear to be biologically male sexed so we're going to be treating it as male gendered for now, but with the meanings to that you'd expect from parents of the political positions we inhabit.  I'm not going to post his name online, because of his privacy when he's older, and I haven't thought of a pseudonym for him yet, so I guess he'll carry on being The Baby.  He was quite big - 8lb 15oz which is pretty much what I expected before he was born, although he looked much smaller. The midwives were very surprised when they weighed him, having been taking bets on 7lb 8oz and 8lb by his appearance.  He's not particularly chubby or long - he must have particularly dense bones

He's quite wakeful so far (what happened to my promised 'newborn babies just sleep for the first 24 hours'?). But I don't mind because I'm too hyped and still-processing-stuff to sleep myself and he seems to like best of all to lay in my arms and look at me, which is lovely.  He's also very keen on breastfeeding, which is a very welcome difference from PB who never opened his mouth properly for the first week.  That's making me a little bit sore because I've lost the knack of latching on someone with no neck control, but I'm sure we'll get over that.

PB is not at all happy today, but I'm pretty confident that's mainly because he's ill with a cold. Fortunately this mostly takes the form of wanting his father the whole time, not me, so that could be a lot worse.

Well, having delegated the most enormous disgusting meconium-y nappy to his grandmother, I hear The Baby coming downstairs again, so I'm going to go and stare into his eyes some more.

And yes somehow I managed to resist the temptation to use ContractionMaster
