Japanese Characters

What I learned from taking Beginners Chinese is that characters are actually very easy to learns if they have radicals. I think, I've mentioned this before. Anyways, I'm pondering what I should even do with the little Japanese I do know. The truth is that I like writing the characters but not learning the grammar so much. I'm in love with my own handwriting and my Chinese teacher complimented me on it. When I began learning, I spent like half a page writing the character over and over hoping it would stick, but it really doesn't. I found out that if I found the character in the real world or some anime, I solidified the character into memory instantly. Not sure, how I could replicate that though. It might be that in the United States, they're out of place and seeing them is unique.
