Universal Pictures announced this week that the studio has reached the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office. Although bringing in $1 billion in box office receipts in North America is not a new experience for Universal Pictures, this year the company hit that milestone three months earlier than at any other time in history.

Universal’s 2012 success is based on a strong slate of films including preternatural titles like Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and Snow White and the Huntsman. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax grossed $214 million at the domestic box office while Snow White and the Huntsman  brought in $153.8 million. Dr. Seuss The Lorax also recorded the highest opening gross ($70.2 million) for an animated film in 2012 and is the highest opening film for Universal this year.

Universal is one of only two studios so far this year to have tw films grossing more than $200 million domestically. Currently four of the top 15 grossing films of the year are Universal properties, more than any other studio.

This is a very good year for Universal which is celebrating their 100th Anniversary in 2012. Achieving the $1 billion mark, sort of puts the icing on the centennial cake however the centennial celebrations will continue throughout the year. It is also a wonderful way to kick-off the next 100 years in Universal’s history.

“This is a proud moment for all of us who’ve had the privilege of working at Universal Pictures,” said Ron Mayer Universal Studios President and COO. “Our centennial is designed to bring special memories back to longtime movie lovers and fans, and to engage new audiences with our extraordinary library of films for the first time. Our goal, 100 years later, is to preserve, restore and continue the iconic legacy of this studio for generations to come.”
