"Kairi. . ?"
"That's my name, don't wear it out." she giggled, the horror momentarily forgotten. She smiled, a smile that always warmed his heart, but here. . here the smile only broke his heart further. She had smiled before she left and now here she was. Smiling as if she never left. Smiling as if nothing ever happened between the two of them.
Why are you smiling. .?
She walked over to him, to his open arms. Gently, she placed her hands on his wrists, pushing his arms down. Confused, Sora began to ask why, why was she smiling, why did she leave, why was she here now, why did she turn down the embrace. But she made sure to stop those questions with an embrace of her own, pressing her face into his shoulder.
"This is real." she said. He could not suppress the smile, the happiness, the warmth and the joy. He pressed his body against hers, wrapping his arms around her waist, but then she began to sob.
Why are you crying?
She fell limp, lifeless, and for a brief moment Sora thought the worst. He looked down and was met with his eyes, no, her eyes. The same oceanic blue of his own, glistening with his own tears. Without a moment's hesitation, they both laughed and kissed each other, the tides behind them crashing against each other one final time. Falling against the sands, they laid next to each other, fingers interlocked, staring up at the stars. The only sound was of them breathing, enjoying each other's company, enjoying the moonlight, enjoying the nice, cool breeze.
"Why are you here, Sora?" she spoke, after the long silence.
"You told me."
"I told you to come here. . ?"
"Yeah."
"Now why would I do that?" she said, smiling softly as she did so.
"How am I supposed to know? I can't read your mind."
"Because I told you once, 'Don't ever forget. Wherever you go, I'm always with you.'."
"I don't understand."
"This is where we grew up together right? With Riku?"
"Yeah."
"Do you remember what you asked me when you found me?"
"Yep. I asked you who you were and where you came from."
"Why do you still remember that?"
"I. . don't know."
"Is it because you lo--"
"Kairi."
"Sora."
"Shut up." He said, playfully. At first, she appeared genuinely hurt by this, but then she smiled and laughed. They shared laughter under the moonlight and stared into each other's eyes. "I remember it because I can't forget you."
"I couldn't forget you either. Why do you think I came back?"
"Because you lo--"
"Sora."
"Kairi."
"Shut up."
"I'm not going to shut up, you love me and you know it."
"I meant it."
"I meant it when I said I love you."
"You never said you loved me."
"That's because I just did."
The blood rushed to her face as she blushed, then shook her head and smiled, kissing Sora's forehead. "I love you too, silly."
"Why are you here?"
"Because you told me you were always with me too, that you would come back to me. You promised."
"But you came back to me."
"Yeah. I came back to you because I didn't want you to have to do all the work. I know how lazy you are."
"I'm not lazy."
"Yes you are."
"Are not!"
"Are too!"
"Are not!" He stood up suddenly, looking off into the distance. Pointing to the end of the beach, the beginning of his sorrows, he nodded to himself mostly. "To prove it, I'm going to race you there. And win."
She stood up too, placing her right hand on her hip, raising up her left index finger and wagging it. "You're on. But you're not going to win."
Sora laughed. "And why's that?"
Without a moment's hesitation, she began to run, looking back at Sora and smiling brightly. "Because I got a head start!"
Sora recoiled, half-frowning, half-smiling. "H-hey! That's no fair!" He shouted, chasing after Kairi, the only sound the two of them laughing and taunting each other.
You're home.
But maybe. . . waiting isn't good enough.
