my weekend in south padre was perfect.
we planned to leave saturday morning about 6am. ha!! well, we finally got out the door at 10am, drove south, stopped for ice, then for gas, then for lunch. (wow!! i don't eat out very often and we had subway, the B.M.T. damn it was good!!) then we stopped at the wal-mart to get batteries for the cameras, driving more, finally made it to south padre around 5:30pm.
wow! we usually go to corpus christi and camp on padre island. but south padre, it was really wonderful. we drove across the bridge, i think it's the queen isabella bridge, quite long. but then you get to the island and there are 3 streets that run north-south and then several short east-west street. we drove north, went by hotels, stores, resturants, clubs, drove some more. then we were out of the "town" and started seeing signs for the beach access roads. so we wanted road #5. we turned in, and got in free!! yay!! free camping. always a plus point.
we drove for about a mile on the sand until we found a good place to park. it was wonderful. the beach to the south of us, waves crashing onto the beach. dunes to the north of us.
south padre is so narrow that i climbed the dunes and could see the sun setting over the bay, and the next morning the sun rose over the ocean.
i went swimming in the ocean. this is a big deal. i don't like water and i don't like swimming. especially in the ocean where there are sharks and fish and things that can touch your legs. but david was with me and he held my hand. we didn't go out far. but the waves would come in and you sit down and the wave carries you in.
and wow! is the ocean salty!!?? i guess i never thought about it. but i got water in my mouth a couple of times and it was like drinking water with a cup of salt in it. ick!! lots of spitting.
we went to matamoros, mexico on sunday. very interesting trip. i would say it's okay. from the different websites i visited i got the idea that you walked across the bridge and there was all the shopping places right there. well, it's not. it's like 2 miles into town. it was scary. and what made it worse is we were the only tourist there practically. there was us. then i saw an older couple and then a couple of what looked like college students. so here are all these shop owners with no one to sell to and here we come. obviously tourist. quite an experience.
there's a lot more to the story, but i'll add more later. we ended up buying a blanket, a bottle of tequila, 4 liters of vanilla and some mexican cigarettes.
the best part of the trip was the camping and being with david. where we camped was basically primitive. about 10 or so miles from the hotels and stores. so it was quiet, isolated and dark. we could see every single star in the sky both night. we saw the milky way and i'm pretty sure there was a meteor shower. we saw quite a few shooting stars both nights.
i haven't had sex outside since i was 18. it was really wonderful. we actually were in our tent, but still pretty much outside. it was cool outside, but not cold. and then if we need to get up during the night to go to the bathroom or get something from the truck, since there's no one around, you can just walk around in the buff. really quite a different experience. quite a liberating experience.
yes, it was a perfect weekend. :)
