ssatva. This one's really important stuff, and consistent with Martin Seligman's work on optimism and learned helplessness. Believing you have control over positive outcomes is vital to motivation, and "Mom thinks I'm smart" doesn't constitute personal control. In fact, it can provoke premature quitting and even cheating. Compliments for effort and for specific successes, however, are helpful.
