Maria liked riding the subway. Sure, it was dirty, and usually crowded, but she liked the time that it gave her to think. To collect her thoughts. Plus, is made her feel like she could blend in a little better, rather than separate herself from civilians. It was nice, even when she couldn't even get a seat. Like today.

She hung onto the rail above her head as the train lurched forward, headphones in her ears. Just a few more stops and she'd be back to the apartment she called home a few weeks at a time out of the year.

I can swing a modern day AU setting for Jim, I think. ;-)

New to the city and its subway system, Jim still had to glance up at the signs once in a while to check how close he was to his stop. There was still a while to go, the motel he was staying at until he found something a little more permanent wasn't exactly top of the line, but not much in that part of town seemed to be.

As the train stopped and more people pushed their way into it, he shifted and wondered if he shouldn't just move on to the next place. It wasn't like he'd even found a job here yet, it would be easy enough. And that was probably why he knew he'd stay for a while. Anything else felt too much like quitting.

Lost in his thoughts, his grip on the rail above slipped when the train lurched forward, and he inadvertently grabbed for the nearest thing to hold onto; the shoulder of the shorter person in front of him who, if the scent of their hair was anything to go by, was decidedly female. "Sorry. Lost my balance."

Maria was pulled from her thoughts when someone who was much larger and masculine bumped into her and grabbed her shoulder. She whirled around, ready to give the guy a black eye if she had to, but instead found a pair of bright blue eyes and a mumbled apology. He seemed sincere enough about it, or she might still have been inclined towards that black eye. Sometimes you couldn't be too careful in this city.

"Oh- it's fine," she assured him, pulling her headphones from her ear. She gave him a small, polite smile. "Haven't got your subway legs yet, huh?"
