7 - I could probably do either present day or trek futuretimes? up to you! agent_hill July 17 2012, 22:12:33 UTC
Maria liked riding the subway. Sure, it was dirty, and usually crowded, but she liked the time that it gave her to think. To collect her thoughts. Plus, is made her feel like she could blend in a little better, rather than separate herself from civilians. It was nice, even when she couldn't even get a seat. Like today.

She hung onto the rail above her head as the train lurched forward, headphones in her ears. Just a few more stops and she'd be back to the apartment she called home a few weeks at a time out of the year.

I can swing a modern day AU setting for Jim, I think. ;-) owns_the_chair July 17 2012, 22:45:35 UTC
New to the city and its subway system, Jim still had to glance up at the signs once in a while to check how close he was to his stop. There was still a while to go, the motel he was staying at until he found something a little more permanent wasn't exactly top of the line, but not much in that part of town seemed to be.

As the train stopped and more people pushed their way into it, he shifted and wondered if he shouldn't just move on to the next place. It wasn't like he'd even found a job here yet, it would be easy enough. And that was probably why he knew he'd stay for a while. Anything else felt too much like quitting.

Lost in his thoughts, his grip on the rail above slipped when the train lurched forward, and he inadvertently grabbed for the nearest thing to hold onto; the shoulder of the shorter person in front of him who, if the scent of their hair was anything to go by, was decidedly female. "Sorry. Lost my balance."

Maria was pulled from her thoughts when someone who was much larger and masculine bumped into her and grabbed her shoulder. She whirled around, ready to give the guy a black eye if she had to, but instead found a pair of bright blue eyes and a mumbled apology. He seemed sincere enough about it, or she might still have been inclined towards that black eye. Sometimes you couldn't be too careful in this city.

"Oh- it's fine," she assured him, pulling her headphones from her ear. She gave him a small, polite smile. "Haven't got your subway legs yet, huh?"

A slow smile appeared on Jim's face as his involuntary support turned around and he ascertained that she wasn't just female, but a pretty attractive one too. Definitely not the worst person on the train he could have picked to bump into, in fact, she was probably the only one in the train car he wouldn't mind being this close to.

"That obvious, huh?" With a slightly self-conscious chuckle, he shrugged and regained his hold on the rail above them. "Let's just say this isn't my preferred method of transportation."

She continued to relax, giving him a small laugh. The guy seemed harmless enough Attractive too, if she was being honest. Just the new guy in town still finding his way around.

"You get used to it," she promised, reaching above to grasp the rail again now that she was facing him. "... Except for the smell. You don't get used to that part."

Scrunching up his nose a bit, he cringed a little in how true her words probably were. This many people crammed together in as little space as the train car offered would never be a good idea in Jim's book.

"Yeah, I was worried that might be the case," he laughed, adding a little wink. "Is it wrong of me to hope I'll always get stuck on the train with you? You smell a lot better than most people in here."

She raised her eyebrows, a smile tugging at her lips at how forward he was. It wasn't exactly unwelcome. "Yeah, well. I bathe more than I suspect most people here do. Thank god."

She shifted a little, slipping a hand into her front pocket. "I can't promise that I'll always be here to hold your hand on the subway," she told him. She bit her lip a moment before continuing. "But I might be able to show you the way to the best bar in the area."

It hadn't exactly been his intention to be forward, flirting just came naturally to him when he saw a pretty woman, and he hadn't really put more thought into the comment than it being soothing any ruffled feathers after having used her for support. That said, he wasn't complaining that she smiled and seemed to take it as more than that. "Then I think we should probably host a train wide class in personal hygiene. I'm not even going to think of what it'd be like if it was a hundred degrees out."

His surprise at her suggestion wasn't entirely feigned, and he kept smiling as he pretended to give it serious thought. "You know, now that you mention it, I have been on the look out for a decent bar... I'd be happy to be shown the sights by a native. Make sure I don't end up somewhere I shouldn't and all that."

Maria glanced up at the monitor above them that showed the upcoming stops. The bar was a bit closer than her own stop so they only had another two to go. After that it was just a short walk a few blocks down. In the meantime, maybe she could learn a little more about this guy.

"Well, if you're looking for a native, you might have to wait a little longer," she replied, smiling a little crookedly. "I've been around a while, so I know the place, but I'm originally from Chicago."

For all the times he'd cursed his luck all the way to Hell and back, Jim had to admit that when it was good, it was absolutely excellent. But that was often true, he thought, for him it was always all or nothing. Amazing luck, or terrible luck, no gray areas, no averages for him. So in a way, it made sense that of all the people in the city he could have bumped into, it would either be someone who'd want to kill him for it, or a pretty woman with a sweet smile and a seemingly good sense of humor.

"Sadly, I've never been a very patient man. You'll have to do, Chicago," he teased lightly. "And I'll bet you know the place a lot better than I do, I just got here two days ago."

Maria certainly didn't want to kill him. Not if he didn't give her reason to, anyway. No, he was far too charming and good-looking for that. Charming, good-looking, and not a co-worker. It was looking pretty good, so far.

She laughed, shaking her head. "Two days, huh? You haven't gotten the grand tour yet, have you? There's a lot of city out there to explore," she told him. She bit her lip a moment, looking him over. "I'm Maria, by the way."
