Clark has no idea how he keeps finding himself waist deep in these kinds of situations. Most of his associates know that dancing is not one of his talents, and that his aptitude for it falls somewhere between 'okay, I guess' and 'please save me'. But word from Above means he's there covering it for an editorial on modern day masques.

At fifteen minutes post arrival, he's slightly less terrified, and lingering near the food table, or whatever fancy name they've borrowed from eras past. His mask is a plain black domino and the matching tux is perhaps a little too snug in some places, but he's trying not to complain because finding one in his size that isn't custom made? Treasure hunt.

Which is apt, considering all the women floating around looking oddly jewel-like. Clark is so caught up in trying to sort out his initial impressions that he doesn't realize someone is trying to catch his attention. When he does, there's a split second of panic, and then manages to find his voice. "I'm a bit terrible at it, but if you'd like..."

He'll lead them out onto the floor unless she rethinks the idea.

"Fake it until you make it." She has an Irish accent, and a wry humor in her voice as she follows him. "I'm still learning myself. But after all, no one will know who you were in the morning."

For all that she claims to be unskilled, she still has an airy grace to her, moving in her gown and petticoats as though they weigh nothing. It helps, perhaps, that her heels are some of the lowest at the dance. She's tall enough without artificial aid.

Once they're amid the crowd of dancers, she turns to him, waiting for him to take lead. Her eyes sparkle behind her mask with a golden glow that she'll explain away as color contacts if anyone asks.

His answering smile is a bit wry. "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Or a foot." The tone, on the other hand, is a little worried, even if he's the only one who knows the potential danger.

Thanks to the air of anonymity that the masks provide, Clark doesn't have to be quite as clumsy as he normally is during the course of the day. He moves smoothly, cutting efficiently through the space around him, and probably looms over her a little at 6'4".

His eyes, without being muted by glasses, are a startling shade of blue. He won't explain them at all if asked. Which is probably a good thing, once he steps into place and turns the two of them around just slightly slower than the tempo, because Clark is very quietly counting his steps. Out loud, yes.

She squeezes his hand gently, not commenting on the counting. After all, she has her own issues with rhythm, and he's leading. She follows well, not getting in the way of his concentration. She's not loomed-over as much as some ladies at the ball would be, standing at a statuesque six feet (plus hair, which adds a good two inches tonight).

Her attention lies on him alone, silently encouraging. Though she had picked him at random, his sheepishness was rather endearing. She found herself wanting to make him look good at this.

When nothing exceptionally bad happens after the first few minutes, he relaxes the set of his shoulders and attempts a not-so-serious expression, managing to smile a little. It's nice not to have to look down so much to converse with someone, too, since Abigail is taller than the average female.

Unfortunately, making Clark look good at dancing is an attempt basically over before it's even begun. It's one of the things he just isn't good at, like drawing, but as long as she doesn't mind the shuffling around, he'll try and stop worrying about it. And somehow, they get around the dancing space twice without maiming any of the other couples.
